Mama Mudhen

I surprised this clapper rail at its nest.  Rails usually slink off quietly when a person approaches their nest, but when they have chicks or when the eggs are very close to hatching, the adult works hard to create a distraction.  This bird made a deep grunting sound while fluffing up its feathers and slumping its shoulders with wings spread to make itself look larger.  Sometimes they grab grass stems with their bill and shake, to make themselves even more intimidating.  After trying scare tactics, the bird tried to lead me away from the nest.   I obliged by following.  Once the bird was sure I was falling for the ruse, it disappeared into the grass like a ghost.
