Loggerhead on the Cohansey

The Delaware Estuary is full of life this time of year. Among the summer residents of the Bay are Loggerhead and Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles. It’s not clear how many are out there, but enough turtles have been satellite tracked to the the Bay from nesting grounds in the southeastern U.S. for us to suspect that there are a lot of turtles out there.

I know there is at least one sea turtle out there right now. While on a boat ride down the Cohansey and out to the Bay today, we saw a large loggerhead turtle surface in the Cohansey River. The calm water conditions of the last few hot and hazy days have made it easier to see surfacing creatures like the turtle we saw as well as the cow-nosed rays that suddenly seem abundant.

The green pointer marks the spot!
