When Wildwood was wild

Above is a view of the beach during summertime at Wildwood, NJ. Click the image below for an idea of what Wildwood, NJ was like when it was truly wild.

This is from the NJ State Geologists report from 1868.  It depicts a cross-section of the habitat transitions across the barrier island from the ocean to the back bay.  I am fascinated by the wet savannas and freshwater swamps thatwere characteristic of large barrier islands like Wildwood.  I’ve read that before it was easy to get to the island, hunters would make the difficult trip to hunt for the ducks that were attracted to these freshwater wetlands.
